In this film, barely discernible images briefly emerge from a ‘noisy’ cascade of texture. The unique nature of the visuals and the film structure invite viewers to construct their own narrative based on recognized symbols and personal associations.

This work is a compilation of initial explorations into the thermocinema technique. The film showcases fundamental possibilities of this technique, including the unique reaction of the thermal layer to contact with various solvents.

There is a unique format: 16mm film, which was essentially doubled 8mm film. The shooting process was as follows: a film roll was only half-used, then the film was flipped to record the second half. The film strip was then cut, resulting in two full 8mm exposed films.
But what if we push this concept further? What if we place not two, but four, or even eight rows of images on a single film strip? The primary interest here is not material efficiency, but rather the desire to understand how much an image can be reduced while maintaining its legibility. 
How many black dots are needed to distinguish a smiling person from a jumping one? For this research, a fragment from Dziga Vertov's film 'Man with a Movie Camera' was used as a source.

Rapid and accurate navigation along the film tape, coupled with a thoughtfully designed workspace, transformed the thermokinescope into a unique platform for live film performances. This allows for instantaneous interaction with the thermal film surface and immediate demonstration of the results.
The video presented here is the outcome of a workshop held at the 'November' cinema. Participants, many of whom were completely unfamiliar with the technique, mastered the art of drawing and various ways of interacting with the thermal paper, using alcohols and diverse heat sources.

Expanding on the initial concept of the film as an endlessly stretched canvas, it became possible to abandon traditional thermal printing and view the tape as a clean, blank canvas. 
This approach transformed the thermokinescope into a complete animation workstation, allowing for the drawing and immediate, real-time viewing of hand-drawn animated films.

This experiment focused on exploring the compatibility of various video sources. An attempt was made to achieve seamless frame transitions, avoiding direct splicing and using unique characteristics of the imagery. 
As source materials, Fritz Lang's film 'Metropolis' (a 6K resolution video from YouTube), and contrasting frames of a football match re-shot on a feature phone from a TV screen were chosen.

Through the implementation of an automated scanning system, the runtime of the produced thermo-film was increased significantly. In this case, fragments from 'Wuthering Heights' movie served as the video source. Decontextualized frames form an entirely different micro-narrative.

Thermokineskope

This was the very first prototype with which stable playback was achieved. However, as it was assembled from numerous 3D-printed parts, it lacked rigidity. During digitization, an error consistently arose and compounded: the frame window would shift out of alignment all the time.
Subsequently, thanks to the creation of a monolithic plywood body, the structural rigidity, as well as the accuracy and speed of the equipment, were significantly improved.

Initial experiments with thermal tape were undertaken during the lockdown period. The tape was manually cut into strips, which were then arranged onto an A4 sheet and scanned. Subsequently, individual frames were manually extracted on a computer and reassembled into video. The production of just three seconds of video footage required approximately three hours.
The project titles refer to locations dear to my heart, which I frequently visited and filmed using my mobile phone camera.

Самые первые опыты с термолентой выполненные во время локдауна
В качестве принтера использовался карманный "детский" чековый принтер.
Лента была вручную разрезана на лоскуты из них был сложен лист форматом а4 и оцифрован на сканере.После уже из цифрового листа а4 на компьютере были вручную вырезаны кадры которые после заново сложились в видео. Производство 3 секунд готового видео занимало около 3 часов.
Хронометраж указан с учетом только распечаттаного материала без учета повторов.Названия связанны с дорогими мне местами где я часто бывал и снимал на камеру мобильного телефона.
